from the vice president...

Dear Friends,

Lyzz here, your friendly FOUST Vice President! I'm filling in for Sam while he takes care of his first year law school finals here at Berkeley. I know I know, it's only his first year, how hard can it be?!

It's been a super exciting month for the UCLA Sailing Team. The Bruins finished third in the coed Pacific Coast Championships, qualifying them for the national championship semifinals, where they took eleventh in the eastern fleet! UCLA took fifth at team race PCCs in Redwood City, and also fifth at women's PCCs in Santa Barbara - only one spot out of qualifying position for women's nationals.

Most recently, UCLA sailors were named in each of the three categories of the All-PCCSC team: Judge Ryan ('14) as a coed skipper, Erica Parker ('14) as a crew, and team captain Carmen Bozina ('11) as a women's skipper. Carmen was also nominated for the district's sportsmanship award. Big congratulations to these amazing sailors and the rest of the team on an incredible 2010-2011 season! We're so proud!

This issue of the newsletter includes regatta reports, info on a racing opportunity with Brendan Huffman ('94), a profile of graduating senior Drew Morton ('11), and a warm welcome to the newest member of the UCLA Sailing community, Annabelle Klopstein! Get your "awwws" ready - pics below!

We've also included the Alumni Regatta Notice of Race that was sent out on April 26 - if you haven't had a chance yet, please RSVP on facebook or using our online form.

Finally, as always, you can pay your 2011 FOUST membership dues here. Annual dues are still a low, low $25.

Hope to see you all on May 21 at the alumni regatta in sunny Marina del Rey!

National Championship Semifinals

The 2011 ICSA National Championship Semifinals took place off the Belmont Pier in Long Beach, April 30-May1. After a postponement to wait out those fickle Santa Ana winds in the morning, the Bruins started strong with a second place finish by Judge Ryan ('14) and Erica Parker ('14). Semifinals are arbitrarily divided into "east" and "west" fleets of 18 teams (although both competed on the same course in Long Beach, with separate starts), and the top half of each advancing to the final championship. UCLA finished Saturday in 10th in the eastern fleet, only 6 points away from a qualifying position.

Judge and Erica after finishing a race at semis.

The Santa Anas were back with a hot, dry, and feeble vengeance on Sunday, and a seriously shifty second race that included upwind sailing in both directions (painful, we've all been there!) knocked the UCLA team farther back from their goal. The Bruins continued to fight hard, and series of top-10 finishes by Oscar Jasklowski ('11) and Carmen Bozina ('11) in B Division kept them within striking distance until the last race. But, Old Dominion University ended the day with a 6th place finish and held on to 9th overall, while UCLA dropped to 11th in the eastern fleet final results.

Wild congratulations to the team for making it to their first national event in a very long time, and for some great sailing against some of the best college sailors in the country. Seasons like these are what makes us all so proud to have been a part of a club (or any) team. Full results here, and additional regatta info here.

Carmen and Oscar head into the dock for a rotation switch at semis.

UCLA had a strong fan section in attendance as well, including current coach Colin Campbell, former non-coach Garrett Woodworth, alumni Lyzz Schwegler ('07), Sam Wheeler ('08) and Neha Bazaj ('10), several current team members who weren't competing themselves, and both Judge and Erica's parents. A lovely weekend in the sun was had by all, with Sam grilling us lunch, some current team members actually getting some studying done, and Lyzz working on her tan (which looks great). Many thanks to everyone who came out!

Spectators on the Long Beach pier watch B Division head out for a start at semis.

FOUST wishes Stanford good luck as the lonesome west coast team at the national championship regatta, May 30 - June 1 at the Gorge in Oregon. USC and UCSB also represented the PCCSC at semifinals but did not qualify.

Women's PCCs

At Women's PCCs in Santa Barbara, Nora Brackbill ('13) sailed A division with Louise Lehman ('14), and Emilia Pelliccio ('13) sailed B with Amy Stuyvesant ('13). Unfortunately, Carmen had to miss this regatta due to academic conflicts in order to be ready to sail co-ed semifinals with Oscar. But the girls battled high seas and wind over 20 knots to finish fifth nonetheless, just one position out of nationals, after an extra berth opened up due to low turnout in other districts.

Full results here. Highlight: Emelia and Amy's 2nd place finish in race 2, in Emelia's first ever regatta as a Women's Varsity skipper.

Team Race PCCs

The PCCSC Team Race Championships were held April 16-17 out of the Stanford boathouse in Redwood City. UCLA finished the first round robin tied for third place with Hawaii, but dropped to a tie for fifth with USC after Amy was sidelined by a dramatic head injury (don't worry she's ok!). Tatsuma Woo-Kawaguchi ('11) stepped in to crew for Drew Morton ('11), and definitely deserves credit for keeping UCLA in the regatta.

Coed PCCs (reprinted from April 14 FOUST news update)

UCLA had an awesome performance at coed PCCs in Long Beach. The Bruins took third and qualified for nationals!

Judge and Erica finished first in A division, winning the Newport Harbor Chamber of Commerce Trophy. The UCLA freshmen edged out Cal Maritime by one point! This is most likely the first time UCLA has won A division at PCCs since the late 1970s. (There are gaps in the district's records - if you know of a more recent UCLA victory please let us know.) Oscar and Carmen also had a solid regatta in B, including a first place finish in race 10.

Full results are available here.

racing opportunity...

If anyone is interested in crewing on keelboats, self-described "UCLA sailing team legend" Brendan Huffman ('94) is bringing his Hobie 33 to Marina del Rey. Brendan is looking for crew members with some racing experience and positive attitudes for the CYC Wet Wednesday series. The races are short, fun, and competitive, and racers also have the chance to socialize at the weekly post-race BBQs.

Anyone interested should email Brendan at mailto:brendan@huffmanpa.com.

sailor profile: drew morton ('11)...

This profile was written by Drew's teammate Oscar Jasklowski ('11). In the next FOUST newsletter, we will be providing short bios of each of the graduating seniors from the class of 2011.

Drew Morton. No-no-no-no-no-no-no-no. DrewManDrew. No-no-no-no-no. THIS GUY. Call him what you will, this graduating senior is an integral part of the sailing team and has been for the past four years. A little background on Drew...

Drew caught the yachting bug early. With Santa Cruz Yacht Club as his base camp, he first learned to race in El Toros and rose through the ranks of their Northern Californian fleet over a number of years. All good things must come to an end, however, and Drew put his El Toro campaign behind him to conquest a different class: the Laser. It was here that he would find his niche, sailing mostly singlehanded regattas until he came to college.

Within a quarter of joining the team in college, Drew ascended to the rank of "Personnel Officer." What exactly does a personnel officer on a college sailing team do? In short, make practice happen. On any given practice day, Drew would somehow get X different people from Y different parts of campus at Z different times into X/5 cars heading for the boathouse at 2:00p.m. It's safe to say that if not for THIS GUY, many of the logistical nightmares that we call "practice" would not have happened. Drew also began sailing in the varsity division his junior year, both in the Laser (Fall Dinghy PCCs in Santa Barbara) and as part of the varsity team racing team. In the spring of his senior year, Drew was part of the varsity squad that won South 4 in Newport Harbor, skippering B division.

In addition to sailing, Drew enjoys terrible cartoon network programming, mountaineering, growing fantastic mustaches, and having the biggest heart (and arms) of anyone on the team. We all wish Drew the best of luck with his future endeavors, which include a potential double-handed sailing campaign with his dad, medical school, and being a kickass Ear, Nose, and Throat Physician.

featured alum: annabelle klopstein...

FOUST sends a warm and fuzzy welcome to Annabelle, the newest and possibly most adorable addition to the UCLA sailing community. While not (yet) an alum herself, Annabelle is the daughter of two former UCLA sailors, Carl Klopstein ('02) and FOUST Secretary Emily Klopstein ('00). We know Annabelle will be just as cute when she's yelling at us old folks to give her room at the mark in 20 years!

corrections to the april newsletter...

UCLA finished first in the South 4 regatta, not South 5.

Funding for the new trailer was provided by Jed Olenick. The Edwardses and Bozinas intend to contribute to a future fundraising goal.

In discussing new coach Colin Campell, credit should have been given to Hal Ryan for generously funding Colin's presence at local SoCal regattas.
